The birth of a war comic legend
The British comic Warlord was a highly influential war-themed anthology published by D.C. Thomson, best remembered for its gritty storytelling and the popular "Warlord Secret Agent" club. Its arrival on 28 September 1974, marked a major event in the UK comic scene, specifically dedicated to military and wartime adventures. The first issue, priced at 5p, famously included a "For Valour" medal as a free gift, capturing the imagination of a generation.
The golden era: iconic strips and lasting impact
Warlord's lead strip, "Codename: Warlord", featured Lord Peter Flint, a World War II secret agent often described as a wartime James Bond. Other legendary strips included "Union Jack Jackson", "Kampfgruppe Falken", and "Bomber Braddock". The comic's immense success even prompted rival publisher IPC to launch Battle Picture Weekly just six months later, cementing Warlord's place in comic history.
From mergers to timeless appeal
In 1978, Warlord absorbed another D.C. Thomson title, Bullet, and continued its successful run for 12 years before concluding on 27 September 1986, with issue number 627. Upon its closure, it was merged into The Victor. While the weekly comic ended, Warlord Summer Specials continued annually until 1991, testament to its enduring popularity.
