The legendary launch of IT
The International Times, often abbreviated as IT, was the definitive British underground newspaper that captured the essence of London's counterculture in the late 1960s. Founded by Barry Miles, John "Hoppy" Hopkins, Jim Haynes, and Tom McGrath, it made its official debut on 15th October 1966 at the Roundhouse in London. This launch party, a pivotal moment in music history, featured early performances by legends such as Pink Floyd and Soft Machine. IT was envisioned as the UK's answer to New York's pioneering The Village Voice.
The iconic logo and its accidental origins
IT is instantly recognisable by its distinctive logo: a grainy, black-and-white image of the silent film star Theda Bara. This iconic choice was, in fact, an accident. The founders initially aimed to use Clara Bow, the famous "It Girl" of the 1920s, a clever nod to the paper’s nickname, IT. However, they mistakenly used a photograph of Bara instead, and it proved so effective they decided to keep it. The paper also faced legal challenges shortly after its launch, necessitating a temporary name change to simply IT due to threats from The Times newspaper.
A hub of countercultural significance
More than just a newspaper, IT served as the epicentre of "London Free School" activism, psychedelic art, and avant-garde literature. It garnered support from numerous influential figures, including Paul McCartney, who was a significant early financial backer and friend to the editors. Other notable contributors and supporters included Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs, and John Lennon. Due to its radical politics and open promotion of drug culture, IT's offices were frequently subjected to police raids. In response to a particularly notable 1967 raid, supporters organised the famous "14-Hour Technicolor Dream" benefit concert at Alexandra Palace to raise crucial funds for the paper.
