The enduring legacy of Beano
The Beano, the world's longest-running weekly comic, first graced the newsstands on 30th July 1938, published by D.C. Thomson & Co. in Dundee, Scotland. It started as a companion to The Dandy, initially featuring stars like Eggo the Ostrich and Lord Snooty. During WWII, paper shortages led to fortnightly publication, but it famously boosted morale by parodying Nazi leaders.
The golden age of iconic characters
The 1950s marked Beano's golden age with the introduction of its most iconic characters. Dennis the Menace debuted in 1951, followed by Roger the Dodger (1953), Minnie the Minx (1953), and The Bash Street Kids (1954). By the 1960s and 70s, The Beano reached peak circulation, selling millions of copies weekly and becoming a staple of British childhood, known for its slapstick humour. While "slipper" or "cane" endings were phased out in the 1980s and 90s, its cultural dominance remained.
