Roar into adventure with Lion comics

Step back into the golden age of British comics. Discover the iconic world of Lion, home to legendary characters and thrilling tales. At Vintage Magazines Comics Music Papers TILLEYS, we bring these treasured pieces of history directly to you.

The legacy of the weekly Lion comic

The Lion comic and its associated Lion Annuals are iconic staples of British boys' adventure fiction, originally published to compete with the high-quality Eagle. Below is a brief history of their evolution.

The Weekly Lion Comic (1952–1974)

Lion was first published on February 23, 1952, by Amalgamated Press (later Fleetway and IPC). It was designed as a direct rival to Eagle, which had dominated the market with the sci-fi hero Dan Dare. To compete, Lion offered a cheaper alternative (initially priced at 3d) while maintaining a high standard of adventure and art.

Meet the legendary characters

To counter Dan Dare, Lion introduced Captain Condor, an "outlaw of space" set in the year 3000. Other legendary characters included Robot Archie (originally called "The Jungle Robot"), the master criminal-turned-hero The Spider, and the RAF ace Paddy Payne.

Lion was known for "swallowing" several other titles over its 22-year run, including Sun (1959), The Champion (1966), and ironically, its former rival Eagle in 1969. It published a total of 1,156 issues before finally merging with its sister title, Valiant, on May 18, 1974.

The highly collectable Lion annuals

The Lion Annuals (1954–1982) were hardcover books released every autumn for the Christmas market. They are highly collectable today, often featuring original stories that didn't appear in the weekly comic.

Each annual typically contained a mix of full-colour and black-and-white comic strips, prose stories, hobby articles, and sports features. The first annual was dated 1954 (released in late 1953) and the series continued long after the weekly comic had folded. The final Lion Annual was published in 1982, by which point the content largely shifted to reprints of classic strips from the IPC/Fleetway archives.
